36 weeks pregnant, or 34 weeks after conception: a baby with a new look

As your baby approaches term, they gradually lose the soft, fine hair that covers them, known as lanugo. There is also a decrease in the amount of vernix caseosa, a waxy, whitish, oily substance covering the baby's skin, which served as protection in utero.
Your baby is improving their sucking reflex daily, regularly swallowing amniotic fluid and sucking their thumb periodically. Their senses are alert and their heart rate may increase due to loud noises (a level above 105 decibels). If the baby is in a breech position, they are unlikely to turn for delivery, as they may have no more room, as is the case for 4-5% of babies.
