11 weeks pregnant, or 9 weeks after conception: the embryo becomes a fetus

Your baby, now called a fetus, weighs almost 8 grams and measures about 5 centimetres. At this stage of pregnancy, important developmental steps are taking place. These include the development of genitals, the formation of red blood cells in the liver, and the appearance of small buds that will later become your child's future teeth. The fetus can now swallow amniotic fluid. Fetal swallowing will be very important throughout your pregnancy as it helps to regenerate the amniotic fluid. The date of your first mandatory ultrasound is fast approaching.
